Once upon a time, wedding keepsakes meant a stack of printed photos and maybe a DVD of your ceremony. Fast forward to today, and your wedding likely lives in the cloud, on social feeds, and in the phones of dozens of guests. Enter the wedding hashtag—a simple phrase that once reigned supreme in organizing and sharing those special memories online.
But in 2025, are wedding hashtags still relevant? We asked a few wedding content creators to weigh in.
The Hashtag Evolution
Wedding hashtags saw a major boom in the mid-2010s, becoming a fun and functional way to gather photos from guests in one searchable spot. However, with the rise of private sharing apps, content creators, and evolving social media trends, the hashtag has seen a decline.
“I keep seeing these articles that are, ‘the wedding hashtag is dead, we’re not doing it anymore.’ And I’m like, yes, we are,” says Ashleigh Coffie, co-host of the Hue I Do podcast.
Chrissandra Jallah, an Atlanta-based wedding photographer and content creator, adds, “I’m pro wedding hashtag because… it was a good way to keep track of it online… and I still think they’re fun, especially if you have a creative one.”
Lanise Harris, a Houston-based content creator, emphasizes the branding potential: “They become part of the couple’s brand and can help bring your celebration to life online.”
When to Skip It
Hashtags can feel repetitive or forced—especially if you’re using a common last name. And with new tech making sharing more private and direct, some may choose to forgo it.
Yet, the experts urge not to be too quick to write them off. “You don’t have to follow the template. Go beyond ‘Journey to [LastName]’ or ‘Happily Ever [Name].’ Personal touches make it memorable,” says Ashleigh.
Crafting a Hashtag That Works in 2025
But perhaps, you’ve long associated being engaged with selecting your wedding hashtag and you are determined to have one for your special day. We get it. However, thinking of the perfect hashtag may seem difficult so before you just land on #MeetTheLastNames, consider these five tips first.
- Search It First: Whatever hashtag you’re thinking of, make sure it’s not already cluttered with posts from other events. Can you imagine how many #IntroducingTheSmiths there are?
- Keep It Snappy: Short, easy-to-remember hashtags are best. Nobody is going to want to type in your complicated and long hashtag, let along remember to spell it correctly.
- Add a Twist: Everyone loves a good pun. This is a great time to insert the personality of you two into the wedding hashtag. Let your humor or history guide the process.
- Think Outside The Last Name: You really don’t have to feel like you only have to use your last name. Actually, some of the best hashtags use nicknames, dates, or song lyrics that fit, too.
- Outsource It: If all else fails because you’re having a brain freeze, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Some wedding content creators like Lanise, offer hashtag development as a service.
To Wrap
While hashtags may not hold the same must-have status they did a few years ago, they’re still a delightful way to collect memories and tell your story. “It doesn’t necessarily have to have a hashtag on it, but it really does set the scene,” Lanise reminds us.
So don’t worry if hashtags aren’t trending—what matters most is what’s meaningful to you. As Chrissandra puts it: “It’s you getting married, do the fun things you can’t do any other time.”
Because in the end, it’s your wedding. Use every tool that helps tell your story—old trend or not.
